C permit in Geneva

The OCPM procedure

In Geneva, the OCPM sets the date from which the C permit can be issued (a date provided by the SEM) and invites the B permit holder to apply. The file includes proof of the required French language level and of the financial situation (no social assistance).

An early C permit application (after five years for well-integrated third-country nationals) follows a separate procedure: the OCPM gives an average processing time of 12 months. C permit holders who leave Switzerland temporarily can apply for a leave of absence to keep their permit.

Registering in Geneva

In Geneva, anyone settling in the canton registers their new address with the OCPM within 14 days of arriving. The procedure depends on nationality (EU/EFTA or third country), on holding an FDFA legitimation card, or on arriving from another canton. The OCPM counters (route de Chancy 88, Onex) work by appointment only, and the biometric data for the residence card is taken at the Cantonal Biometrics Centre in Vernier.

Who can get a C permit in Geneva?

The C permit is the settlement permit: an open-ended, unconditional right of residence granted after five or ten years in Switzerland. It gives unrestricted access to the labour market. The SEM sets the date from which the canton can issue it.

Work

A C permit holder can take any job, employed or self-employed, without a permit.

Renewal

The right of residence is unlimited, but the residence card is renewed periodically by the canton. A long absence from Switzerland can cost the C permit; a leave of absence can be requested.
