L permit in Geneva

The OCPM procedure

For a contract of three months to one year, EU/EFTA nationals apply to the OCPM for an L permit; it lasts as long as the contract. Work of less than three months per calendar year needs no permit but an online notification to the SEM, filed by the employer.

For third-country nationals, the employer files the short-term permit application; it is subject to the federal quotas and SEM approval.

Registering in Geneva

In Geneva, anyone settling in the canton registers their new address with the OCPM within 14 days of arriving. The procedure depends on nationality (EU/EFTA or third country), on holding an FDFA legitimation card, or on arriving from another canton. The OCPM counters (route de Chancy 88, Onex) work by appointment only, and the biometric data for the residence card is taken at the Cantonal Biometrics Centre in Vernier.
