EU/EFTA nationals
An EU/EFTA student gets a B permit for non-working people by showing their enrolment at a recognised institution, sufficient financial means and health and accident insurance. They register with the municipality (Vaud) or the OCPM (Geneva) after arriving.
Third-country nationals
The application is made before entry, at the Swiss representation in the country of residence: letter of admission from the school, accommodation, financial means for the length of the studies and the required personal qualifications. Once in Switzerland, the arrival is registered with the canton.
Working while studying
Third-country students can take part-time side work within the limits set by the OASA, as long as it does not extend the normal length of their studies.
Processing time in Geneva
The OCPM publishes an average processing time of 6 to 8 weeks for a student permit application.
Processing times published by the cantonal office
| Canton | Application | Indicative time |
